Ladies Reading Club

Goal: $2,000.00

Mission

The Ladies Reading Club is a philanthropic organization for the promotion of higher intellectual, social and moral conditions.

Profile

The Ladies Reading Club grew out of The Ladies Aid Society, which was a response to the needs of the community following the Grasshopper Plague in August 1874.  The Ladies Club has been in constant activity ever since this time.  In 1896, the building on the south west corner of Jefferson and 3rd street was given to the Ladies as a Club House and is still in use today.  The house was the first CLub House west of the Mississippi and one of the few owned by a club today.   Maintaining the house's historic spot in Junction City history is one of the prime concerns of the organization.  In addition to maintaining the house, the Ladies participate in several philanthropic organizations in the city.  A $500.00 scholarship is given each year to a local graduating high school senior.  As a member of the General Federation Of Womens Club International, the group also hosts the states annual musicial audition where scholarship money is also awarded.
