Specific Need

Local food insecurity:  Too many Geary County families face hunger.  Our county has one of the highest rates of food insecurity in Kansas, at 13.3%.  It ranks third in the state for child food insecurity, at 23.6%.  The number of individuals served has risen dramatically as collaborative efforts have expanded and economic needs have risen.  Individual numbers served rose from 1,338 in August of 2023 to 1,886 in August of 2024!

The future: Better facility, better service:  We have outgrown our current facility and desperately need increased and improved space.  After an exhaustive two-year search for available real estate, the Geary County Food Pantry has purchased land at the corner of 7th Street and Clay Street to build a new facility that will enable us to help more people and better serve those in need.  With a better facility, more fresh foods could be offered to promote healthier diets and neighbors can be served in a manner that supports individual choice and dignity. 

Our groundbreaking ceremony was conducted in late September.  We are proceeding with construction of the new facility to maximize support and hopefully lessen costs for the project, but we have not yet reached our final fiscal goal.  We plan to use funds raised through the 2024 Geary County Match Day to support our facility and infrastructure needs.

The Geary County Food Pantry is committed to providing those in need with access to healthy foods by working together with a wide range of community partners.  Our priority is developing a service model which respects the dignity and autonomy of our clients and supports individual choice.  

The Geary County Food Pantry facilitates access to a wide range of resources for neighbors and focuses on informing and educating our community regarding food insecurity in Geary County.
